The spirit of Sam Stephenson, Dublin’s most controversial architect of the 1960s and ’70s still inspires Number 31. Sam, who converted a stable block into his cutting-edge city centre home at the end of the 1950s, was uncompromising in his embrace of modern architecture. Since his attitude ruffled quite a few feathers, having a refuge where he could retreat and recharge was essential.
